Remembering Cassius: The World’s Largest Crocodile in Captivity

The Legacy of Cassius

Cassius, a remarkable saltwater crocodile, has passed away at the age of over 110 years. Born in the wild, Cassius captured the hearts of many during his lifetime, and he was notably recognized as the world’s largest crocodile in captivity. Measuring an impressive 5.48 meters (17.9 feet) in length and weighing over a ton, he was a true giant in the reptile world.

A Life at the Sanctuary

Since 1987, Cassius resided at a sanctuary on Green Island, located near Cairns in Queensland, Australia. His presence at the sanctuary not only offered visitors a chance to witness his grandeur, but he also served as an important figure in crocodile conservation efforts. Sadly, Cassius had been in poor health since October 15, leading to a collective sense of dread among his caretakers and the public.

Remembering Cassius

The sanctuary expressed their deep sorrow over Cassius’s passing via social media, stating, “He will be greatly missed, but our love and memories of him will remain forever in our hearts.” This sentiment resonates with many who admired this magnificent creature. Cassius held the Guinness World Record for the largest crocodile in captivity following the death of Lolong, a 6.17-meter (20.2-foot) crocodile from the Philippines, in 2013. As we pay tribute to Cassius, we reflect on his remarkable life and the joy he brought to those who visited him.
